We're
All About Birds, for All Seasons
October 2006
You
can start thinking about taking your hummingbird feeders
down for winter storage. Before boxing them up, clean
them in a mild bleach solution so they're ready to go next
spring.
Now's
a good time to relocate that tube feeder , too. Especially
if you've been feeding Nyjer seed all summer and have been
neglectful in raking up the tiny hulls left on the ground.
Give your yard a break, and eliminate various bacteria,
before winter sets in. Just move it a couple feet
away - your finches won't even notice.
You
may want to consider selecting a nice new birdbath as a
garden or yard focus point, too. Our birdbaths traditionally
go on sale in October, but supplies are limited so watch
for our sale notice!
Speaking
of birdbaths, if you don't have a heated birdbath , we can't
recommend strongly enough that you purchase one. A
heated water source will draw nearly as many birds in the
winter as a feeder. While our heated baths are not
on sale, we do have a great selection of stand-alones or
heating elements that you can place in your existing (or
new) bath.
