Safflower took the birdfeeding world by storm a few years ago when it was discovered that cardinals, chickadees and other birds enjoyed it but those pesky squirrels leave it alone. The safflower industry has introduced a new seed called NutraSaff (trademarked) that is a golden-colored safflower. It contains a higher protein and oil content than other safflowers and it has a much thinner hull. So far birds appear to prefer this improved variety.
Safflower is a great way to offer food on the ground for cardinals and other birds - the squirrels don't like it!
