We know one of our least favorite activities is cleaning the bottom of moldy feeders. In hot, humid temps your feeders will instantly sprout mold if any moisture has seeped into the seed or feeder. Tube feeders are especially prone to mold on the bottom layer of seed. But Feeder Fresh is specifically designed to put an end to moldy tube feeders!
Feeder Fresh is small granules of silica that absorb excess moisture. Just like the sand that birds normally ingest as "grit" for the health of their crops, silica is the same base particle, it just has a different absorbancy ratio. It's non-toxic to birds, but they generally just discard it if they pull it out of a seed port.
We recommend sprinkling a small half-inch layer of feeder fresh in the bottom of your tube feeder every time you refill it. Or, if you don't let your feeder empty all the way prior to filling it, just layer a strip of feeder fresh in every time you fill it. The layer will keep inching its way to the bottom of the feeder as the birds ingest the seed. The photo shows how the layer should appear on the bottom of your feeder.
One 9 oz. container of Feeder Fresh is enough to refill your feeder roughly 50 times.
