Safflower seeds are loved by cardinals and chickadees, and are often found in mixes, but the seed's true value shows during the summer months when grackles will quickly empty a feeder of a sunflower seed mix. In the Midwest, we recommend people switch over to straight safflower from mid-April to early September if they have problems with starlings and grackles at specific feeders. Both breeds can consume shelled sunflower seeds, but their beaks aren't strong enough to crack the ones in the shell. Another plus: squirrels generally don't like safflower! (note we say "generally. we've learned to never predict squirrel behavior!)
Birds who love safflower include cardinals, chickadees, titmice, woodpeckers, nuthatches and grosbeaks.
Offer safflower in any traditional tube seed feeder, hopper feeder or fly-through/platform feeders.
UPS ground shipping is included in our listed on-line price and does not reflect in-store pricing.
