Lots of birders love to feed their birds mealworms, but live mealworms can be a challenge to find locally and an even greater challenge to successfully ship live; especially during the summer months.
We've found a great solution for you: dried mealworms. They still contain all the great protein your birds need, they ship well and you don't have to worry about keeping them alive. And, perhaps the greatest part: they're nearly half the cost of live mealworms!
If you've not offered mealworms to your birds before, this is a great way to start. "Mealies" are a favorite of nearly all backyard birds - trust us, set a budget limit now - your birds will devour them more quickly than you can keep them in the feeder. Chickadees and nuthatches usually find them first, woodpeckers, flickers, cardinals, bluebirds and orioles will quickly follow suit.
Offer the mealworms sprinkled on top your favorite seed in a platform or fly-through feeder, or any window feeder. Our personal favorite is Droll Yankees' Seed Saver domed feeder, pictured below.
Each packet contains nearly 2,800 mealworms (just under 4 ounces) and comes in a re-sealable bag. Try a pack today - we guarantee you and your birds will enjoy them.
Mealworm update: Live mealworms are slowly starting to become available. The main breeding facility, which hasn't been able to produce mealworms for nearly 3 months, has pinpointed the problem. It looks like live mealworms will be more readily available in September. In the meantime, your orioles will gobble up the dried ones if you offer them next to their grape jelly or nectar. Chickadees, wrens and woodpeckers will consume dried mealworms as well - just place them near your suet feeder, peanut feeder or sprinkle them in with your seed in a fly-thru feeder.
